Sound Meditation is a healing practice that allows us to experience inner calm and deep relaxation. The Nada Yoga is based on the premise that everything in the cosmos, including human beings, consists of sound vibrations, called nada. This is actually consistent with modern scientific theories that suggest that the universe could be made of entirely out of vibrating one-dimensional strings.

In the 21st century, our pace of life has accelerated, and every day we are bombarded with more information and stimulation than our ancestors encountered during entire lifetimes. Because we’re constantly bombarded with so much stimulation and stress, our bodies are almost constantly in a state of “fight or flight“. “Fight of flight” causes our bodies to release adrenaline as well as cortisol, a catabolic hormone that breaks down body tissue to give us enough energy to escape dangerous situations. Being in this agitated state and having cortisol in our bodies for long periods of time causes us to suffer from stress, anxiety, insomnia, and countless other chronic health problems.

So many of us today are looking for relief from our constant stress, and it is widely accepted in academic world that the most direct way to experience inner peace and well-being is through meditation. As you know, when you meditate your breathing slows, your blood pressure decreases, and your stress hormone levels fall. This allows your body to release from the “fight or flight” response, repair itself, and work as it was designed to.

Sound Meditation isn’t about forcing your mind to be quiet, but about experiencing the peace that is already there. Even when your mind is filled with agitated thoughts, you still have access to the inner stillness and calm that always lies beneath the choppy surface of thought and emotion. Even as your body is resting deeply in meditation, your mind is awake, though quiet. The term restful awareness captures the unique combination of physical relaxation and mental alertness.

It has been documented that regularly meditating for half an hour provides more psychological rest than a full night’s sleep. As you meditate on a regular basis, you will notice an increased sense of well-being as well as greater energy and creativity.
